World of Worries
There’s many things to worry about these days: inflation, Ukraine, home mortgage interest rates, student loans, no hygiene applicants, no (qualified) front desk applicants, decreasing insurance reimbursements, increasing costs…so many things.
When we start to ruminate on these things, we start to worry. We get anxious.
The word anxious is translated into Greek as μεριμνα (mermina). The root of the word is μεριζω (merizo): “to divide, to separate.” This means that we have a “mind divided”. This division, between being present in our daily lives, and thinking/worrying about the future…is unproductive at best, and horribly destructive at worst. It’s worthless to do what we call “worrying.”
Finding Serenity
It makes me think of the Serenity prayer: “Grant to us the serenity of mind to accept that which cannot be changed; courage to change that which can be changed; and, wisdom to know the one from the other.”
These problems that we face (the ones under our control) often affect us in real time and affect our business. When we face this, we need to stop worrying and start strategizing. Look for strategies and tactics that help us.
This is where we need to stop this “divided mind” and start focusing singularly on what we can do. Do a deep dive into the problem, and solutions. Come up with ALL solutions. In the case of inflation, we can’t do much about it externally. However, inside our business we can look where we can combat it. Do we raise prices? Do we drop insurance participation? Do we drop softwares we don’t use often? Do we attack all of these things simultaneously?
Once we stop worrying and start getting tactical, that’s then the magic happens.
